Tea At The Pittsburg Public Library

My cousin lives in Pittsburg, Kansas and visits the public library there quite frequently. She recently got a hold of me to let John and I know that they were going to be having a 'Downton Abbey' tea there and wondered if we'd like to come. We reserved our spot and attended the tea this afternoon, and we were so glad that we did! We had a great time! There was plenty of tea, lots of goodies, a harpist, and Englishman, Rob Smith, who read poetry suitable for the occasion. Below are a few photographs and some of the poems that our English friend shared with us today.

A Cup of Tea by Anonymous

When the world is all at odds
And the mind is all at sea
Then cease the useless tedium
And brew a cup of tea.
There is magic in its fragrance,
There is solace in its taste;
And the laden moments vanish
Somehow into space.
The world becomes a lovely thing!
There’s beauty as you’ll see;
All because you briefly stopped
To brew a cup of tea.

Crumpets and Tea by Eugene Field

Eugene Field, American writer, best known for his children's poetry and humorous essays.There are happenings in life that are destined to rise
Like dear, hallowed visions before a man’s eyes;
And the passage of years shall not dim in the least
The glory and joy of our Sabbath-day feast,—
The Sabbath-day luncheon that ’s spread for us three,—
My worthy companions, Teresa and Leigh,
And me, all so hungry for crumpets and tea.

There are cynics who say with invidious zest
That a crumpet’s a thing that will never digest;
But I happen to know that a crumpet is prime
For digestion, if only you give it its time.
Or if, by a chance, it should not quite agree,
Why, who would begrudge a physician his fee
For plying his trade upon crumpets and tea?

To toast crumpets quite à la mode, I require
A proper long fork and a proper quick fire;
And when they are browned, without further ado,
I put on the butter, that soaks through and through.
And meantime Teresa, directed by Leigh,
Compounds and |xnirs out a rich brew for us three;
And so we sit down to our crumpets—and tea.

A hand-organ grinds in the street a weird bit,—
Confound those Italians! I wish they would quit
Interrupting our feast with their dolorous airs,
Suggestive of climbing the heavenly stairs.
(It ’s thoughts of the future, as all will agree,
That we fain would dismiss from our bosoms when we
Sit down to discussion of crumpets and tea!)

The Sabbath-day luncheon whereof I now speak
Quite answers its purpose the rest of the week;
Yet with the next Sabbath I wait for the bell
Announcing the man who has crumpets to sell;
Then I scuttle downstairs in a frenzy of glee,
And purchase for sixpence enough for us three,
Who hunger and hanker for crumpets and tea.

But soon—ah! too soon—I must bid a farewell
To joys that succeed to the sound of that bell,
Must hie me away from the dank, foggy shore
That’s filled me with colic and—yearnings for more!
Then the cruel, the heartless, the conscienceless sea
Shall bear me afar from Teresa and Leigh
And the other twin friendships of crumpets and tea.

Yet often, ay, ever, before my wan eyes
That Sabbath-day luncheon of old shall arise.
My stomach, perhaps, shall improve by the change,
Since crumpets it seems to prefer at long range;
But, oh, how my palate will hanker to be
In London again with Teresa and Leigh,
Enjoying the rapture of crumpets and tea!

Five Minute Friday - Together

It's FRIDAY! That means it's time for another Five Minute Friday where, as our hostess and inspiration, Lisa-Jo Baker, puts it, we write "For only five short, bold, beautiful minutes. Unscripted and unedited. We just write without worrying if it’s just right or not."

Today's prompt is together. So...here...we...
Go!

About once a month a few close girlfriends/family members and I get together for tea. We rotate houses and each one, in turn, serves as hostess to the others. Today was my turn.

I always look forward to getting together with this particular lovely group of ladies. Our little group consists of one friend a little older than myself (mother and mother-in-law to two of the girls), two friends younger than myself (daughter and daughter-in-law of the slightly older friend), my oldest daughter, and an assortment of whatever children might be in tow with the two girls in the middle. (The little girls usually outnumber the little boys by a two-to-one ratio, but Baby Leeza is always the star of our show! She is absolutely delightful and just full of fun!)

Sweet Baby Leeza
What I appreciate most about this particular group of ladies is that there is never any tension...no pretense...no pressure...no stress...no gossip. There is usually a lot of laughter, sometimes a few tears, and always a sweet time of fellowship that lingers long and runs deep.

Together my sweet friends and I drink tea, eat something scrumptious (my treat today was pumpkin streusel muffins), and just enjoy being together. We discuss what's been going on in our lives since our last get-together, news of family and friends far away, what we've all got coming up, and recipes. Today's discussion focused primarily on plans for a long-overdue, upcoming, polar bear birthday party, plans for the soon-approaching holidays, and matters of the heart and spirit.

Theses special times, shared together with special, long-time friends, aren't anything fancy. They just are! And that, being coupled together with the fact that we are together is what makes them so wonderfully special!

Stop!

Until next time...

All My Love,
~Rebecca

New Tea Pot

25th Anniversary Tea Pot
Our oldest daughter found this pretty little teapot (actually I think it's a coffee pot, but since we don't drink coffee, it will HAVE to serve as a teapot!) at a thrift store yesterday and brought it to us in celebration of our 25th wedding anniversary (which was last month...on Valentine's Day...which we have yet to find the time and means to celebrate...????) LOL! Pretty, though, isn't it?

Old Paths Ladies' Christmas Tea - 12/23/11/Tea-Time Recipes

What a busy week it's been! I've barely had time to catch my breath and oh! How I've missed visiting with you! I thought I'd take a quick minute to share a little bit about our annual Ladies' Christmas Tea that was held this morning. I served Mini Cream Cheese Sandwiches On Rye, Double Orange Scones, Cherry Bonbons (recipes included and I can't believe that I didn't even take one photo of the food!), thin mints, and three kinds of loose-leaf tea...Angel's Dreams, Blueberry Vanilla Cream, and Rhubarb Cream. I shared a devotional based on Isaiah 9:6...

“For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.”

Not all of our ladies were able to join us, but I think that the ladies that did attend had a good time and I know I did!

Now...for those recipes!

MINI CREAM CHEESE SANDWICHES ON RYE

1/4 cup Miracle Whip
1-8 oz. package cream cheese
2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
1 package (2 1/2 oz.) thinly sliced cooked corned beef, chopped
2 tablespoons grated red onion
3/4 teaspoon dill weed
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 pound thinly sliced seedless rye bread

In a mixing bowl, beat cream cheese, Miracle Whip, and mustard. Add corned beef, onion, dill, and salt; mix well. Spread 2 tablespoons of filling over half of the bread; top with remaining bread. Makes about 16 sandwiches.

DOUBLE ORANGE SCONES

2 cups flour
3 T. sugar
2 1/2 tsp. baking powder
2 tsp. grated orange peel
1/3 c. margerine
1/2 c. manderine oranges, drained
1/4 c. milk
1 egg

Mix all ingredients together. Flatten dough into a disk in the middle of a cookie sheet. Sprinkle 1 Tablespoon of sugar over the top and, using a floured knife, cut disk into eighths. Bake at 400 degrees for 15 to 20 minutes. Serve with Orange Butter (recipe below). Make 8 scones.

Orange Butter

1/2 c. margerine
2 T. orange marmalade

Mix together until well blended. Serve on warm scones.

CHERRY BONBONS

Maraschino cherries with stems
Semisweet chocolate chips

Take the cherries out of the jar they come in and put them on paper towels so the liquid can drain off. Then, fill a small deep container (like a coffee cup) with chocolate chips and place in microwave. To melt the chocolate, heat it on high for 20 seconds, stir, then heat again for 20 seconds. Repeat until chocolate is just melted. Then, holding the cherries by their stems, dip them in chocolate. Set the dipped cherries on wax paper. Chill in the refrigerator.

Next it's time to get ready for tonight's Candlelight Service. Have a blessed evening and a wonderful weekend as, together in heart and spirit, we celebrate the birth of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Merry Christmas!

All My Love,
~Rebecca

Good Friday Evening! - 6/17/11

Good Evening, Dear Friends!

It's been a busy week! At the time of my last post I was awaiting our youngest daughter, Amanda, and her friend, Heather. They were going to visit Prairie State Park, kick around town a bit, then, eventually, end up here for the night...which they did!

We had a great visit and, over supper, I finally got to watch TANGLED! Now...that may not sound like a big deal, but it really is. My daughter...even though she's 25-years-old...loves any Disney princess movie. She and her husband saw TANGLED at the theater, and the night that they saw it she called me and made me promise not to watch it until we could watch it together. That wasn't a problem at all...until one of my 5-year-old granddaughters got it and wanted me to watch it with her. I can't tell you happy she was to find out that I had finally watched it with Aunt Amanda and am now free to watch it with her! LOL!

After watching TANGLED Amanda and Heather and I had an impromptu tea party. Here's a couple of pictures of us enjoying each other's company...

Heather, Rebecca, and Amanda

Over the course of the visit the girls and I enjoyed three different kinds of tea...rhubarb cream, blueberry vanilla cream, and Angel's Dream. I made a blueberry/cream cheese coffeecake for dessert. Yum!

The girls spent the night here and left before lunch the next morning. I don't know about them, but I had a lot of fun! It's been a long time since I've got to have 'girl time' with one of my daughters!

The rest of the day Thursday was spent doing school and preparing for our trip to Springfield today and Tony's surgery...which, by the way...went very well! The surgeon was sure that there would be tendon damage, but even she was surprised to find that there wasn't any! The BB was lodged under both tendons and was imbedded in the bone, but there was no damage to the tendons or the bone! The Lord's presence was evident on every front and His peace was upon us today. Please join us in praising the Lord for His awesome provision, His tender mercy, and His never-ending love and care!

Well, Ladies, I am going to close for now. We have another baby shower tomorrow and, of course, Sunday is Father's Day. Now that I'm past Tony's surgery, perhaps I can turn my attention elsewhere. Have a great evening and a beautiful and blessed weekend!

All My Love,
~Rebecca

Life Is Like A Teacup

Teacups...

They come in all sizes, shapes, and colors. Some are short
and fat, some are tall and slender, some are stout and strong, while still others are very fragile and delicate. But every one is different...unique...and useful...made to serve a purpose.

Just as teacups are different, so is what goes in them. Some cups hold tea, while others hold coffee, hot cider, juice, or just plain ol' water. It's all a matter of personal choice and preference.

Another choice we make when filling our cup is how full to fill it. Some cups have "just a smidgen" in the bottom, while others are "comfortably full." Still others are "full to the brim" and "overflowing."

How much like people's lives and life itself this sounds as we study out and think about teacups and what goes in them!

Like teacups, people come in all sizes, shapes, and colors...yet each one is different...unique...and useful...made to fulfill a divine purpose.

Just as unique as what goes into a teacup, so, too, is what goes into a person's life. Different events and happenings all aid to our individual uniqueness. While many of these events and happenings are part of God's divine course for our individual lives, a lot of these events and happenings are made as a result of our own choosing. Each of us make choices every day that will effect our lives...forever!

Some of these choices are big, major decisions that leave a definite mark on our personal history and time-line, but...by far...most of the decisions that we make are small, day-to-day decisions...decisions made as minute-by-minute we work through the day at hand. Decisions that for the most part are forgotten as quickly as they are made, but in some small way, as small decision upon small decision is made, they will effect our life...forever changing it's course in one way or another.

What kind of decisions are you making minute-by-minute? What do those choices reflect about what's really going on inside of you? Are you making decisions that glorify the Lord? Are you constantly striving to live daily for Him? Are the decisions you make aiding in and adding to your spiritual growth? Or are the decisions that you are making in day-to-day life leading you, one small step at a time, further and further away from the Lord? If so, it's never too late to change the course that your life is taking.

Also, just as we must decide what to fill our lives with, we must choose how full to fill them. Is your life shallow and, for the most part, empty? Perhaps it is "comfortably full?" Perhaps you are one of those people who are careful not to step outside the comfort zone that you, in fact, have set up for yourself. Or are you adventuresome and willing to step outside of your comfort zone...fully lending yourself to the Lord so He can accomplish His goals and His agendas through you, as well as, lead you into a life that`s "full to the brim" and "running over?"

Whatever the case...I challenge you...the next time that you fill your cup with...whatever it is that you enjoy drinking...reflect back over your life. Think about the things that have been talked about here. Compare your life to a teacup.

What kind of cup would you be? What would be in that cup? And how full would it be if your life were suddenly transformed into a teacup?

Are you willing to pour out your life as a drink offering unto the Lord...so that He, in turn, can re-fill you with His love and compassion for people? Are you ready to put yourself in position to receive all that He has for you as He fills you with an unquenchable zest for life?

In John 10:10 Jesus tells us that He came that we "might have life" and that we might "have it more abundantly." Are you willing to step back, re-evaluate and let Him fill you and your life "up to the brim" and "running over?" Boy! I sure am! I am to the point that I want less of me and more...more...more of Him. How about you?

Ladies' Winter Tea - 1/4/10 - "Are You Winterized?"

This morning the ladies of our church got together for tea. Due to weather not all of our ladies were able to attend, but those that did come had a fine time of fellowship. Considering the bitterly cold weather and snow, our devotional "Are You Winterized?" was quite timely.

Tea Basket

Our community is having a benefit dinner and auction for our grandson Saturday, and here's a picture of the tea basket that our church put together for auction. Wish I had taken a better picture of the beautiful teapot that my friend and I found for it yesterday. It's right in the middle on top there, but you really can't tell much about it. It is very beautiful!
