30 Days of Summer - Post #1 - The First Day of Summer

Hello! Welcome to my first post in our brand new 30 Days of Summer blog series and link-up! I'm excited! And I'm so glad that you're here! 🌞

Summer officially began at 5:07 a.m. here in the Central Time Zone. I read earlier that, in England, thousands gathered at Stonehenge this morning to witness the dawn of the longest day of the year. For me, the best thing about summer solstice is that, from here on out, the days get shorter and we're headed towards fall! 🍁 YEAH! 😃

Traditionally, I suppose the first day of summer evokes images of fun-in-the-sun 🌞, playing and splashing around in cool water 🤽, ice cream sundaes 🍨, and more, but, to be perfectly honest, summer has always been my least favorite of all the seasons.

As a child, summer heat meant one escape to northern Minnesota where temperatures were cooler, the days longer, and water plentiful. My dad would spend the extra-long days of northern summers out on a lake fishing while my mom and I (and whoever else might happen to have gone along with us...aunts, cousins, grandparents, or friends) would spend our time sight-seeing and exploring. My happiest summer memories are in that place and drawn from those experiences. 🌲🚣🐺

Of course, I've seldom looked past Missouri's heat and humidity long enough to look for the real beauty of summer here. I'm hoping that, instead of just enduring the summer season this year, that writing for this blog series will help me to get out and, purposefully, look beyond my own comfort levels and dig for the treasures that are hidden within each of the long, hot days of summer, and help me to better appreciate them. For that I would truly be thankful! 🙏

So...what do people here in southwest Missouri do to celebrate the first day of summer?
I image not a whole lot of anything out of the hard and live life.

For me, nothing too exciting for sure. Since I missed witnessing the dawn of summer solstice, I guess after I finish breakfast (cottage cheese on toast), my cuppa tea, and this post, my husband and I will head for the grocery store. After we get home, my plan is to turn the sourdough starter that I've got going into a couple of loaves of bread and get my daily reading done. In the evening I will probably go for a walk. And, oh! I need to try to catch a toad for Hug-A-Herp Day at work on Saturday, so I will probably try to do that this evening, as well. (There's been one hanging around the front porch in the late evenings, so it shouldn't be too difficult.)

So...that's my big plans for the day! How will you spend the first day of summer???

My plan is to post the link to each post of the 30 Days of Summer blog series here, so they will be all together in one place, so be sure to check back often and come celebrate the 30 Days of Summer with Jean and me!

Until next time...

  1. I'm so excited the link worked! As much as I love summer, I admit we don't usually do anything special to herald the season's arrival. Perhaps I'll drag my youngest son out to get snow cones later today in honor of summer. Of course, we don't exactly have the summer weather today do we? Feels more like Minnesota around here :) I do hope this series allows you to appreciate summer as much as my fall series led me to appreciate fall.

    1. That's what my husband said first thing this morning! "Feels more like Minnesota this morning!" Yes! Quite unexpected and very nice! <3 And, yes, I think it will. I'm already more excited about summer right now than I've ever been! Blessings, my friend! <3

  2. Hi and happy summer to you Rebecca!! I love that some of your favorite memories are kind of from my neck of the northwoods of WI and only a quick drive over a bridge to northern MN. ;) I do love that the days are longer now. It's so nice and I have more energy and get more done.

I had a great walk with Ruby along the bay to celebrate my first days of summer. Also some fun time hanging out with my daughter and her friend as they talked about babysitting job plans for the summer.

    Let the fun begin! xoxo

    1. So glad you've decided to join us, Carrie! I think it's going to be fun! Yes, many memories of the north woods here and I know that bridge well. Spent a lot of time at Two Harbors and Duluth, too! There's nothing like watching those big iron ore and other ships coming in and out of the harbor and the breakwater at Two Harbors is one of my most favorite places in the world! That and Split Rock, of course! :) Sounds like a beautiful way to spend the first day of summer! I'm greatly looking forward to our adventure! Blessings! <3

I value your readership and love reading your comments! Please leave one today so that I know you were here! Have a wonderful day and God bless you!
