Summer Bucket List 2019 Update

It's a rainy Saturday morning here in Southwest Missouri and I'm off work for the weekend...the last official weekend of the summer season 2019!

I have decided to use a portion of this time off to sit on my back porch, relax with a cup of hot tea, listen to the rain, and update my Summer Bucket List 2019.

This summer has been busier than usual and it has fairly flown by without me accomplishing much of anything that I had hoped to beyond work. It seems that the things that have been accomplished have had to be grabbed at, here and there, in bits and pieces, without really getting to enjoy any of them. I feel like I've been on a treadmill for months and it's really starting to wear on me. All I can do at this point is move on into fall and hope for better things.

PLEASE NOTE: I am posting this post in full as it was written with
completed items marked with a line through them and notes made in bold
type where appropriate. I have added a lot of pictures, too!😊

Once again, the summer season is upon us and, as always, it promises to be a busy one. I have been thinking about some of the things that I'd like to do this summer and some of the things that I hope to accomplish over the course of it. I know that, in reality, I probably won't get to all of them, but having a list will certainly help me to focus on the season and remind me to enjoy it to the fullest!

"...ye see and know of your own selves that summer is now nigh at hand"
(Luke 21:30).

39. Order crocus bulbs for fall planting
40.  Finish recycled Christmas card project that I've started

That's what's on my summer bucket list. Now...what's on yours?

Until next time...

Tuesday 4 Meme - Just Bits and Pieces

Greetings, Dear Friends!

It's time for another Tuesday 4 Meme! Some of Toni's questions this week are complicated and thought-provoking. Here are my answers...

Just Bits And Pieces

1.   What is one quote that you love to quote?

Image result for mr. bennet for what do we live but to make sport of our neighbor

2.   Do you ever at times see the world in black and white?

The question is...do I ever NOT see the world in black and white? Always...always..always! There are no gray areas for me. (Although...I do love color!) 🧑

(Does any of that make sense???) 😳

3.   What is something that you never want to do again?

Float the Niangua River! Bad, bad, BAD experience! 😨

4.   Do you believe there is life somewhere else in the universe?

If you're talking about extraterrestrials πŸ‘½ (aliens) ...no ; if you're talking about spiritual beings πŸ‘Ό (angels) and πŸ˜ˆ (demons)...yes.

Happy Homemaker Monday - September 16, 2019

Greetings, Dear Ones! HAPPY MONDAY! πŸ’—

I hope you all had a lovely week and weekend. Ours was busy and, for me, it went by in one big blur! I cannot believe how fast the weeks (months...years) are flying by. It's crazy! 😳

Friends through work joined us for supper Tuesday night and I couldn't resist setting a fall table.

We had a fine supper then enjoyed music on the old Victrola.

My Grandmother's Victrola
The Victrola was given to my Grandma Maudie as a gift from her husband, my Grandpa Wiley. My dad cut his baby teeth on the foot of that Victrola (and, yes, the teeth marks are still there...I just got down on the floor to look) and my grandpa died when Dad was only three, so the Victrola was always one of Grandma's most treasured possessions. It still works and it's a lot of fun to open it up every now and again and listen to an old record or two...my favorite of which is Jimmie Brown The Newsboy by The Carter Family.

My dad's name was Jim Brown and, when I was little, and Grandma would play that record, I thought it was a song about my dad. πŸ˜†

I worked Wednesday, worked on projects around the house on Thursday, worked Friday, Saturday, and in the afternoon on Sunday.

Friday I presented a program on weaving in nature and our study focused on some of nature's most magnificent weavers...spiders πŸ•· (and their webs, of course)! πŸ•Έ The children really enjoyed getting out into the field and studying these creatures and their handiwork first hand and up close! πŸ’—

On Saturday I worked the Fall Rendezvous a the Nathan Boone Homestead State Historic Site. It was a lovely day and I got to participate in a 40-minute tour of the property, which was a lot of fun!

Okay...I'm sure I've bored you enough with details about last week's events, so lets move on, shall we? Won't you join me as I link up with Sandra of Diary of a Stay At Home Mom and all the other lovely ladies that gather there on this week's Happy Homemaker Monday? πŸ’—

Right now I am...

... Finishing up lunch and enjoying an iced tea from Casey's as I work on this post.

On the breakfast plate...

... eggs, toast, and hot tea.

The weather...

... Right now it is 94 degrees with a heat index of 100. The next few days promise more of the same, then cooler with temps in the 80's. I will be so glad when fall weather arrives! 😩

... On my reading pile...

This week I finished And Jesus Healed Them All by Gloria Copeland; am still reading
On The Banks of Plum Creek by Laura Ingalls Wilder.

On the menu this week...

Monday - Tomato lentil soup with rustic oat and wheat bread (freezer)
Tuesday - Homemade pizza
Wednesday - Pasta, sauce, meatballs, and homemade French bread (freezer)
Thursday - Ham and beans with cornbread (freezer)
Friday - Salmon patties, mashed butternut squash, and steamed broccoli
Saturday - Out
Sunday - Leftovers

On my 'to do' list...

- Monday - Figure mid-month budget, bank, HHM post, home blessing, laundry, plan the week ahead
- Tuesday - Wish our oldest granddaughter a Happy Birthday; work on projects around the house
- Wednesday - Work (Leaf Man Library Program)
- Thursday - Work (work Nevada, Missouri's 'History Day'); go to the grocery store
- Friday - Work
- Saturday - Enjoy a weekend off; attend Prairie Days (our town's annual fall festival); go to the parade in the evening, and have supper up town
- Sunday - Church

In the craft basket...

... still just trying to keep up with the temperature afghan.

Last Week's Picture
(Will Try To Post A New One Next Week)
Looking forward to this week...

... having the weekend off!!! πŸ˜„

Something I enjoyed watching this week...

... this Gulf Frittilary butterfly fluttering around and sipping nectar from our zinnias. So pretty! πŸ¦‹

From the camera...

...I discovered this fat, little fellow on the kiosk on the front door of the nature center where I work. He hangs around there quite often and is so cute! 🐸

Well, Ladies, that's it for this week! I pray that each and every one of you have a blessed and beautiful week ahead! And I'll see you again next week! πŸ’—

Low-Spend September Update - Week #2

Well...we're officially into Week #2 (technically Week #3) of our 'Low-Spend September' and, thus far, it's going great!

I'm managing to keep up with menu plans and am still finding that most of the meals that I prepare are making enough for more than one meal...generally it's enough for two...sometimes more...BUT...most of the meals can be frozen and worked in later, so I guess that's okay. In the long run it saves time and energy (not only utility-wise, but my own, as well)! πŸ˜†

The biggest problem I'm having is...as I use small amounts of grain and turn them into breads, I'm refreezing major portions of the finished product to be used as accompaniments to meals further down the road and, as a result, on one hand my freezer space is going down a little at a time (a cup of cracked wheat here or a half cup of rolled oats there); then, suddenly, it is filled to overflowing with cut and portioned loaves of rustic oat and wheat bread, rolls, and muffins. 🍞

To make matters worse (if you can call it that), the tomatoes in our garden are coming on like gangbusters! Every few days I'm adding a few more bags of frozen tomato puree to the freezer. At present our freezer is level full of bread and tomatoes! LOL! Perhaps I should make a lot of breaded tomatoes! πŸ˜ƒ

(I soooo hope my cousin is reading this! His mom used to make breaded tomatoes a lot when we were kids and he absolutely detests the thought of them! LOL!) πŸ˜†

And don't get me wrong...I am NOT complaining! We are blessed to overflowing and we know it. Sometimes I'm just not sure how to handle the overflow and I don't like to waste ANY-thing!

For example, I'm going to be working a special event out of town on Saturday, so I cooked Saturday night's ham and beans and cornbread today so that, all we have to do when I get home Saturday night, is reheat.

I divided the 9- x 9-inch pan of cornbread into 8 pieces and separated them into four freezer bags (that's four meals worth for me and my husband) and I cooked a pound of pinto beans.

I seasoned the beans with salt, pepper, and a small amount of ham. When the beans were tender I divided them into three containers (one to be used Saturday night; the other two later on). When I got done dividing the ham and beans, I had a full quart of delicious, savory bean broth left over. It would have been so easy to just dump it down the sink, but I couldn't. Instead, I saved it. What flavor it will add as a base to a soup on a chilly autumn day or to any recipe calling for vegetable broth! 🍁

We live in such a wasteful society today and, sometimes, it's hard to remember and implement the old way of doing things.

"Waste not, want not!"

That's what the old-timers used to say...and they were right. Everything that we use up and don't waste is one more thing that we don't have to want for or spend money on.

Goodness! I kind of got off track there, but...since I'm on a soapbox...I may as well end this post with this...

Does anyone out there have any tips or stories to share on how your family "wastes not, wants not"?

Until next time...
